- Magnetic surveying requires magnetometers for the
precise measurement of the geomagnetic field and Global Positioning
Systems (GPS) to provide precise geographic locations. Magnetic
measurements usually are made from aircraft or ships, although
ground surveys are used in some special applications. GUMP
has the equipment required for groundsurveys but acquires airborne
magnetic surveys by contracting with private companies.
