DIFFRACTOMETER

Equipment

  • Phillips X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), purchased in 1964 and upgraded in 1990. Instrument capabilities: (1) Powder diffraction; ( 2) Powder and camera diffraction. Located at Woods Hole.
  • Diano 2000, purchased in 1991. Horizontal goniometer (no corrections required, very high accuracy); computer controlled; nickel filter; collimation slits. Operational; recently moved, realigned, recalibrated. Single samples, oriented slides (packed powder cells also acceptable); Cu K-alpha tube; used mainly for clays and carbonates but other minerals can be run. Located in Reston.
  • Scintag X1, Automated X-ray Powder Diffractometer (XRD), purchased in 1996. Instrument capabilities (1) as configured: instrument is used primarily for mineral identification of single and multiphase samples and for semiquantitative XRD analysis at room temperature. Both a single and a 12-position sample changer (for unattended operation) are available for use. Sample holders include top- and side-loading sample cups and zero-background quartz plates. Instrument is interfaced with a PC (Windows NT operating system) for computer control of hardware and for online data reduction. (2) possible upgrades: additional components available from the manufacturer include high and low temperature stages. Located in Reston
