USGS-Geologic Scientific Capabilities - Cartographic Analyses

GEOLOGICAL
PHOTOGRAMMETRY
LABORATORY

PRODUCTS

The lab has been involved in many aspects of geologic data acquisition related to geologic hazards, mapping, custom base preparation and 3-D modeling studies. Most of this work has resulted in publication in peer-reviewed journals, although unpublished in-house and special customer requests are common. In most of the efforts, the lab has remained a silent partner, neither asking nor requiring acknowledgement. The majority of geologic maps published in the Central Region, and many in the Western Region, have compilation components derived from the Plotter Lab

COOPERATORS

Recent or current Department of Interior use includes Geologic and Water Resources Divisions of the USGS, the National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land management, Bureau of Reclamation. Outside users have included researchers from U.S. and foreign universities, the Colorado Geological Survey, the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, California Department of Transportation, and California Department of Parks and Recreation.

FUTURE DIRECTIONS

Like many technology-driven fields, trends in photogrammetry derive heavily from advances in computing capability. "Soft-copy" or digital imagery photogrammetric work stations are the directions of the future. Currently the USGS has only one fully functional facility in the Central Region, located in the National Mapping Division. This is a"secured facility" and users must obtain a security clearance prior to admission to the facility. The Plotter Lab will develop a support-base for Geologic Division and outside users in this arena as funding becomes available. Our current plan is to eliminate all analog PG-2 instruments from the lab, maintain two digital PG-2s, one analytical stereoplotter for projects requiring high-resolution instrumentation, and support 2-4 in-house "soft copy" photogrammetric workstations. Additionally, the lab will provide photogrammetric support for "soft-copy" hotogrammetric workstations in Menlo Park, CVO (Vancouver), AVO (Anchorage), HVO (Hawaii), and Tucson field offices.
